Projects, processes and pursuing a career in IT

Today, we catch up with Sam Darwin, LIG’s IT Apprentice. Sam is now 4 weeks into his apprenticeship with LIG, so we wanted to find out how it’s going, and what Sam’s hopes for the future are.

  1. Firstly, what led you to pursue an IT apprenticeship with LIG?

It was a desire to learn new skills and help the company, while being able to pursue something that I enjoy.

  1. What are some of the key skills or experiences you hope to gain during your time as an IT apprentice at LIG?

I really want to develop the skills to be able to utilise and develop software, that ultimately will be useful in an increasingly computer focused world.

  1. How do you see your apprenticeship helping you in your future career?

I hope to learn a lot about how we can improve the way we conduct our operations, and improve the efficiency of our processes by utilising new and upcoming technology.

  1. What do you like about working in IT?

I have always enjoyed having projects to work on and the feeling of accomplishment upon successfully completing one. IT has a great deal of scope for such projects all of which are aimed at improving how we, at LIG, do things. This includes looking at process efficiencies and utilising IT to streamline how we operate.

  1. Can you share a bit about the mentorship or guidance you’ve received so far as an apprentice at LIG?

Everyone in the department has been great so far, getting me setup and taking the time to guide me through how everything works. The team have set me tasks so that the knowledge I’m learning sticks.

  1. Are there any specific projects or areas within IT that you’re particularly eager to dive into during your apprenticeship?

Cybersecurity is a big one especially with all the AI developments going on at the moment. It’s becoming more important than ever to make sure all our data is secured from any potential threat.

  1. What advice would you give to others considering an apprenticeship in the IT field, especially at LIG?

It’s definitely worth doing! I’ve enjoyed myself so far and I’m looking forward to the projects I get to work on it the future.

As Sam continues to progress through his apprenticeship with LIG, we will bring you more updates from not only Sam, but also the team supporting him and his learning.
