Last Thursday saw the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) host its record-breaking Stars of the Future Awards 2025 at the Heart of England Conference and Events Centre. Among the many deserving winners, Steve Mooney, Head of Operational Excellence at Lowton Infrastructure Group (LIG), was named Group Apprentice Mentor of the Year, sharing the accolade with Paul Rawsterne of Watling JCB.
The CPA Stars of the Future Awards are a prestigious annual event that recognises the brightest emerging talent in the industry, from apprentices and trainees to the mentors who guide them. This year’s ceremony saw over 103 nominations, the highest in the award’s history, judged across 21 categories by a panel of 14 industry experts.

With over 40 years of experience in the sector, Steve is affectionately known across the industry as “Mr Crane” a title that reflects both his technical expertise and his reputation for excellence. His role at LIG goes far beyond operational oversight; he provides support, inspiration, and knowledge for apprentices and colleagues alike.
From delivering training sessions at the LIG Training Academy to representing the company at school career days, Steve is committed to nurturing the next generation of industry professionals. His mentoring style is grounded in empathy, trust, and inclusivity, and he is known for tailoring his communication to suit each individual, whether onsite or in the office.
