Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming Jo Platt, Labour MP for Leigh and Atherton, to LIG’s headquarters. Jo’s visit gave us the opportunity to showcase the work we do across the UK and to engage in meaningful dialogue about the future of infrastructure, skills, and sustainability in our sector.
Jo’s visit began with a tour of our facilities, where she met members of our operations and leadership teams. We shared insights into how LIG delivers over 8,000 complex lifting and logistics projects annually, from EV charger, solar farm and BESS installs, to build, upgrade and decommission of telecoms sites – making us a key partner in the UKs technological and renewable energy transition plans.
Members of our leadership team sat down with Jo to discuss some of the key challenges and opportunities facing our industry. Topics included:
- The urgent need to address skills shortages in specialised roles like Appointed Persons, and the lack of apprenticeship pathways to support them.
- How government support could help SMEs like LIG modernise fleets in line with sustainability goals.
- The importance of reforming local planning regulations to accelerate 5G rollout, especially in urban and semi-rural areas.
- How LIG can engage with the Labour MPs group on local growth funding to ensure our expansion plans align with regional investment priorities.
We also explored how SMEs can be better included in public infrastructure contracts, ensuring stability and enabling long-term investment in people, equipment, and innovation.
Jo’s genuine interest in our work and her commitment to supporting local businesses was clear throughout the visit. We’re grateful for her time, and her willingness to listen to the voices of those delivering critical infrastructure on the ground.
Thank you, Jo, for joining us. We look forward to continuing the conversation.
